About MARS

MARS volunteers working an adoption event in St. Louis, MO

Midwest Akita Rescue Society (MARS) is a subsidiary of Akita Owners Rescue Foundation – one of the original Akita rescue groups in the U.S.  MARS is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and is operated entirely by volunteers. We rely entirely on donations from a large family of member adopters and supporters who love and honor the Akita breed.

We are proud to say that we have placed over 800 Akitas during our tenure and keep them forever in our hearts.

Mission

We are dedicated to evaluating, rescuing, medically treating, rehabilitating, and re-homing abandoned, relinquished or otherwise homeless Akita dogs. We also participate in mentoring Akita owners and prospective owners, and we work with schools in educating children on the proper, safe and humane way to live and work with Akitas and pet animals in general.  We are one of a group of regional Akita rescue organizations, and are part of the Akita Club of America (ACA).

Anyone interested in adopting from our organization is required to have basic knowledge of the breed and complete a comprehensive adoption application, with requested vet and personal references. Further, we conduct a hands-on home check to meet the residents and see where the potential Akita will be living. We charge an adoption fee and stand ready to take back any of our orphans during their life span should the need arise.

History

Our organization was formed in 1998 by a small group of concerned individuals that felt that they could assist orphaned and in-need Akitas residing in the Midwestern region of the United States. We were originally an arm of the Akita Owners Rescue Foundation, Inc. and later enveloped our mother organization and are now Akita Owners Rescue Foundation. d.b.a. Midwest Akita Rescue Society.

Areas Served

MARS operates primarily in the midwest section of the country, which is also where we place the majority of our orphans. We serve the states of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota as well as parts of Kentucky and Kansas.
