As an all-volunteer organization, Midwest Akita Rescue Society (MARS) depends entirely on the efforts of our volunteers to continue in our mission to rescue Akita dogs. The following are some ways you can lend your time to help MARS. All volunteers must be 18 or older. Foster
Fosters open their homes to help provide dogs with the care they need while we find them permanent homes. If you are ready to become a foster, please fill out our Foster Home Application form.
Fundraising
Our adoption fee covers only a very small portion of our expenses, so we rely heavily on donations and every penny we raise goes toward our Akitas. Successful fundraising events help make sure we’re financially prepared to treat dogs that need extra medical care or fostering. We welcome volunteers with experience in fundraising. Some opportunities would be coordinating or helping run a fundraiser or contacting business for donations to help with a fundraiser.
Marketing/PR
The more visibility our adoptable dogs get, the better chance they have of finding a home. Great photos and videos of the dogs help get them noticed. A strong and engaging social media presence helps MARS reach as many people as possible. We also need to attract more fosters and volunteers to our organization. If you have experience with marketing, public relations, social media, writing, photography, video, newsletters or e-commerce, this may be the opportunity for you!
Administrative
Are you the organized, detail-oriented type? Maybe you’re whiz with spreadsheets or you have excellent phone manners. It may not be the most glamorous job, but we always need help with administrative tasks, like forwarding emails, making phone calls, updating spreadsheets and any other paperwork that might come up.
Transportation
MARS covers a very large territory and we are in need of transport volunteers to get our orphans to safety in their foster homes. If you would like to help transport MARS orphans, fill out our Transport Volunteer form.
We also need help with transportation of donations. If you can help pick up donations of dog food or other items, please fill out the volunteer form below.
At the Kennels
MARS volunteers work with dogs at the kennel in Chardon, OH
MARS doesn’t have a physical shelter, but we do have kennels that we work with that help us temporarily house dogs until we can find foster homes. If you live near Chardon, OH (Cleveland area) or St. Louis, MO, we have opportunities for you to help walk dogs or take photos and videos of the dogs at the kennels.
